On September 4, 2018, Timo Rost took over the coaching office at SpVgg Bayreuth. It should be the day afterwards that had a lasting impact on the recent past of the association. The Upper Franconia had just played 2-2 in Pipinsried and, after eight match days, were only four points in the last place in the regional league Bavaria. The then coach Joe Albersinger had to go - and ex -professional rust took over the troop. The 145-time Bundesliga player immediately sprayed confidence, despite the difficult task. It is now clear why.
After the miserable start, the Bayreuther ended the 2018/19 season in ninth place and even kept the class very confidently. And in the following season, which was characterized by Corona interruptions, the old town was suddenly a top team. The season could not be played normally because of the pandemic, the master was nevertheless determined in Play-offs: Aschaffenburg, Bayreuth and Schweinfurt played the first in the regional league Bayern. At that time the Schnüdel were too strong for the SpVgg.
The Bayreuther may have been a little too green behind the ears. But the general tenor was: Learn from the experiences and attack them directly again. This is exactly what Rost & Co. achieved the Bayreuther played an incredibly constant season 2021/22, hardly any slips. While the competition from Schweinfurt is struggling with the negative experience of the lost relegation against Havelse and the SpVgg Unterhaching had too many construction sites after relegation, the SpVgg simply did its job. Rust and his team had developed again compared to the previous year, sprayed the mentality of a top team.
decisive game 4-0 against Bayern
In the promotion struggle, the duel between Bayreuth and the little Bavaria emerged more and more. The Munich, who, however, lost important players (Motika, Batista Meier, Arrey-MBI) in winter, also played a strong season. Ultimately not strong enough. The rust protégés took the decisive step towards the championship and ascent on Easter Monday when the home game against Bayern was in front of over 10,000 spectators. There was a clear 4-0 for the home side and the old town pulled away in the table. With the completely unexpected 0: 4-person against the bottom of Rosenheim there was another setback. But in the end, the Bayreuther secured the completely deserved first place, which was also calculated after the 0: 4 of FCB II against Burghausen on Friday evening.
the reasons for success

The reasons for this success of the Bayreuther are complex. But of course the trainer has a good proportion. Rost brought the success back to Bayreuth, built up a team that could play for the climb. He did the team and the individual players better. The former Bundesliga player has a clear game philosophy that the team kept implementing. The Bayreuther were the best shifting team in the league and caused problems with the fast counterattacks many teams.
The old town was also mostly able to rely on its strong defensive. No team conceded as few goals as the Upper Franconia. Behind a strong back team was a safe backing, keeper Sebastian Kolbe demonstrated its quality one time or another, for example only recently in the important 1-0 away win in Illertissen.
In addition, the Bayreuther were able to rely on their goal scorer: Markus Ziereis was accurate in the regional league Bayern and thus played a large part in the success of the team. However, the master's offensive must not be reduced to him, Stefan Maderer, Alexander Nollenberger and Ivan Knezevic also played a very strong season, which ended with the direct rise and the renewed qualification for the DFB Cup.
After the goalkeeper, defensive and offensive have already been mentioned, the midfield should not be missing. Benedikt Kirsch was an absolute top newcomer for the 4th league in summer. Rust immediately made him captain - and the 15 -time second division player paid back with strong performances. Shortly before the end of the transfer phase in the summer, Nicolas Andermatt came another player for the regional league, who had already played 42 times in the 3rd division. All in all, the Bayreuther had one of the best teams in the league on paper, which lived up to their reputation against the strong competition from Munich, Schweinfurt and Unterhaching in an impressive way - especially away: in 18 games the SpVgg remained undefeated and went out 16 times as the winner.
What's next with rust?
However, the big question is currently behind the sporting success: How is trainer Rost going on? There are a number of media reports according to which the Bayreuth Coach is said to have signed for the new season at second division relegated Erzgebirge Aue. A departure of the 43-year-old would undoubtedly hit the Bayreuther hard, because the success of the recent years has the clear manuscript of the trainer.
